The Roots of hockey

A form of hockey was first played by in Egypt about 4000 years ago and also in Ethiopia around 1,000 BC. The Romans, Greeks and the Aztec's also had a form of hockey.
The modern game of hockey that we know today first originated from England in the mid- 18th century.
Hockey first appeared in the Olympics in 1908 in London with only England, Ireland and Scotland competing against each other.
After hockey made its first appearance in the 1908 Olympics, it was dropped in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm. Hockey then made an appearance once again in the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp.


In 1909 Hockey started to head towards a international federation. This happened because the hockey association in England and Belgium agreed to jointly regulate the International hockey relations.
1924 was the date when the International Hockey Federation (FIH) was founded.

In 1927 women started women started to play hockey which led to the International Federation of Women's Hockey associations (IFWHA) being formed. Australia, Denmark, England, Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, the United States and Wales founded the IFWHA association.
